Traversing the Two Halves of Life
This retreat is inspired by the book: Falling Upward: A Spirituality for the Two Halves of Lives by Richard Rohr (cac.org/richard-rohr). Whilst the book is written from a Christian perspective, the retreat will work with themes inspired by the book in an inclusive manner, allowing each person to apply their own beliefs and understandings of inner/soul work to this exploration.
What looks like falling can largely be experienced as falling upward and onward, into a broader and deeper world, where the soul has found its fullness, is finally connected to the whole, and lives inside the Big Picture.
Sooner or later, if you are on any classic "spiritual schedule", some event, person, death, idea, or relationship will enter your life that you simply cannot deal with, using your present skill set, your acquired knowledge, or your strong willpower. Spiritually speaking, you will be, you must be, led to the edge of your own private resources. At that point you will stumble over a necessary stumbling stone... or to state it in our language here, you will and you must "lose" at something. This is the only way that Life-Fate-God-Grace-Mystery can get you to change, let go of your egocentric preoccupations, and go on the further and larger journey. I wish I could say this was not true, but it is darn near absolute in the spiritual literature of the world. (Richard Rohr) In this retreat, skilled facilitators help create a quiet, focused, and disciplined space—a circle of trust—in which the noise within us and around us can subside and we can begin to hear our own inner voice. In the large group, small groups, and solitary settings, we will explore the intersection of our personal and professional lives, making use of stories from our own journeys and insights from poets, storytellers, and various wisdom traditions. Each retreat includes a Clearness Committee where you learn to listen deeply and ask insightful “open and honest” questions.
